In my eyes, if we were to look at any of the Recruitment Entrepreneurs, across any market & based in any geography, & ask them what really pulled them to start their own recruitment agency & become an entrepreneur, you’d be hard pushed to find a business owner not attracted to autonomy & control, working for yourself can bring you.
Here at Isotope, we’ve provided recruitment start-up support to so many Recruitment Entrepreneurs over the years (check out some of our current clients, here), that’s we’d have to be idiots not to appreciate how important the desire for 100% autonomy is for the recruiters we’re so lucky to work with.
Let’s face it, successful Recruiters are headstrong, bullish & resilient individuals who work in an industry where autonomy within an employed setting is often given. This freedom (or facade of such in some cases) means that, over the years, we’ve been able to see clear patterns when it comes to how autonomy really pulls a recruitment consultant to start their own recruitment agency & become a Recruitment Entrepreneur. 2, in fact.
The first; that those with an “ultimate” level of autonomy within their current employer naturally find themselves questioning why they would not, given the level of freedom control & impact they have in the agency they work within, make the leap & start their own agency. This is not through a frustration around a lack of autonomy in their current role but more an awareness that, ultimately, there will always be a lack of control to some degree when working for an agency.
The second; that those with restrictions, limitations & fundamentally a lack of autonomy & freedom in their current role naturally find themselves feeling both frustrated & restricted when it comes to their own careers due to the lack of autonomy they have in their current role. This could be epitomised in geography or client restrictions, in restrictions around fee negotiations or just simply around exploring new markets & new verticals that you, a seasoned recruiter, feel would be worth exploring. It’s this lack of autonomy & feeling of restriction that causes recruiters to explore how they can achieve ultimate autonomy in what they do, who they work with & their perception in the market. The answer? Starting their own recruitment agency.
Both have an underlying theme. Autonomy.
So, what is it about autonomy that really drives a recruiter to become a Recruitment Entrepreneur?
Everyone values certainty in one way or another & while running your own recruitment agency is full of variety, challenge, curve-balls & the like, one thing it does give you is certainty. Certainty over the direction of your business & your career because, however corny I know it may sound, you are ultimately in control.
& control is an instinctual desire within everyone, not to mention us recruiters! & without too ephemeral about it, we all know that life can be challenging & uncertain at times but (& I suppose this a theme that our clients have cited over the years) the reality of running your own business means that you will always have control of your career.
There is often a reservation for recruiters to suggest that one of the major drivers for them to start their own recruitment agency is the pride that they will feel when doing it. Under the illusion that to suggest that they are doing this for their own personal pride in somehow narcissistic & egotistical.
Of course, this is not the case.
It’s right, logical, heck natural to feel proud of the business you are creating &, over the years of being fortunate enough to work with so many recruiters across so many different markets all with unique goals for what they want their own recruitment agency to look like, one of the most common trends is that they are all pulled towards the idea because of the sense of the pride that they know they will feel.
After all, your input has a direct correlation to the bottom line of your business. That is the reality of being a Recruitment Entrepreneur &, for so many, they’re so proud of that.
& if we follow pride back to its root? It is the reality that with ultimate autonomy within their own agency, they can create the business they want to – in no one’s eyes, but their own.
Much like Elon Musk feels that cars were made to be autonomous, here at Isotope we believe that recruiters were always meant to be 100% autonomous in what they do & how they do it.
As previously mentioned in this blog, recruiters are often pulled towards the idea of starting their own agency because of autonomy, whether that be the presence of it within their current employment or lack thereof – it’s always there.
You are taught in recruitment to view your desk, your branch, your division as your “own business within a business” – our question has always been, why not create your own desk, your own branch, your own division in your own business?
Something that the Recruitment Entrepreneurs we’re fortunate enough to work with & support can all relate to.
If you’re a recruitment consultant fixated on the idea of starting your own recruitment agency & becoming a Recruitment Entrepreneur, then you will be able to relate to this blog today. You just will. & if that’s the case then, of course, we’d love to hear from you. Learn more about how Isotope can help you start your own recruitment agency & help you in creating the recruitment agency you’ve always strived for.
