Since our first chat with John who back then was an employed recruitment consultant tentatively exploring the idea of starting his own recruitment agency, we knew that this was something he was fixated on doing. John was clearly exploring his options, exploring the various “ways” you can start your own recruitment agency & it was our “job” to ensure that we spent time understanding his vision, understanding his ambitions & ensure that we felt confident that the Isotope model was the right model for him. After some fantastic conversations, it became clear that Isotope were the right fit & since then, we haven’t looked back. Fast forward to now & we were able to sit down & talk about his entrepreneurial journey so far. Here’s what we discussed:

So, tell us a little bit about your recruitment background.

I have been working in recruitment for over 8 years now with 5 ½ years of that being in the Healthcare sector.  I started my career with a very well known “Worldwide” Consultancy where I cut my teeth in the Construction sector managing a dual desk within the Building Maintenance space.  I then had the opportunity to join a Healthcare Specialist Recruitment Consultancy and since then I have loved every minute of working in the Healthcare sector.  Throughout my recruitment career I’ve managed my own temp desks, perm desks, dual desks and then later had the privilege of managing a team of 11 Consultants over 6 different sectors before deciding to launch AyrCare Executive Search Ltd.

& when would you say you initially started thinking about the idea of one day starting your own recruitment agency?

From early on in my recruitment career the thought of one day starting my own recruitment firm has been there but I would say in the past 18 months is when I started researching what needed to be done to start my own recruitment business.

What made you “make the leap” & decide to start your own recruitment agency when you did? Was there a particular professional catalyst? Personal landmark? Tell us.

In my previous role I had grown the business from 2 Consultants covering 1 sector to 11 covering 6 sectors and thought “I’ve built someone else’s business so why not do it for myself” so I decided to “make the leap” and get the ball rolling.  In a strange way, lockdown helped me make the decision and go for it as it allowed me to envisage how the business could run remotely.

What were the motivations for you to start your own recruitment agency?

Flexibility was a major motivation for me as I have a young family and want to be there as much as possible to watch them grow up.  Other factors certainly came into play such as, financial rewards, having the ability to run my business completely as I see fit and also to move away from a “traditional agency” way of thinking (e.g. KPI’s, call times) to a more consultative, personalised service.

Tell us a little about Ayrcare Executive Search.

Sales pitch answer – We are an Executive Search Firm who specialise in Leadership roles within the Health & Social Care Sector to Care providers throughout the UK.

Human answer – We truly care about the Care Industry… Because of this our aim is not million-pound profits but to play our small part in improving care standards by introducing the most passionate Care Leaders to the top Care providers.

If you could paint a picture of what the business looks like in 3 years time, what would the business look like?

Alive & kicking would be a great start! Ideally, we will have 2-3 more experienced Consultants who buy into our ethos of “Having the end service user in mind” for the reason we do what we do.

With that will come relocation to a bigger office and who knows maybe an office dog!

& what pulled you to work with Isotope to help you in your recruitment business?

From my initial call with it just felt “right”.  Max and Laura were fantastic in talking me through what Isotope had to offer and more importantly how that matched my vision for my business.  Throughout the full process, the full Isotope team have been there every step of the way.

What has surprised you most about working with Isotope so far?

I knew the team would be supportive, but I did not expect as much support as I have had so far… Even if it’s just a check in call, I know Max, Laura, Jordan & Alan are there for anything I need.

What would you say to a recruitment consultant reading this today & toying with the idea of starting their own agency?

Go for It, you will not regret it!

Is it tough going at times…? Yes.

Can it be stressful…? Yes.

Does everything go to plan…? No.

But… Isn’t recruitment like this anyway so why not do it for yourself rather than building someone else’s dream!

& in an alternate universe, a universe where recruitment did not exist – what profession would you be in?

Tough question… In a dream world, I would say a Sports Psychologist but in reality, I would say most likely an Estate Agent.

We have had the pleasure of working with John for long enough to know the type of recruiter he is & the type of agency he is so focussed on ensuring Ayrcare becomes. The irony is, despite the challenges that every agency faces as they grow & remain loyal to the ideals of what they want their agency to look like, he has already begun to build a business that he can be proud of. We know we are proud of him & feel very lucky to be part of his journey so far.
