Having sailed through school with flying colours, 4 A* grades at A-Level & enjoying enough sporting memories to last a life time...

…the biggest decision you had to make was which one of these 5 unconditional offers to the best Red-Brick universities in the UK were you going to take. A decision to rival that of Sophies Choice, you landed on one (because it looked like it had the best nightlife & cheapest drinks!) & the next few years went by in a flash.

Now, for many fresh-faced youngsters out of school, this was a time of uncertainty. How do you just “pick” what you want to do for the rest of life? But not for you. You’ve always known. You’ve always known that deep deep down, recruitment was your calling. So, after knocking on the door of the agency you did 3 summers worth of work with during your education, you settled into the role that you would make your own over the next few years. The years pass & you make the leap to start your own business, venture out on your own & forge a life-plan for yourself & your wonderful family. Day 1 comes & goes & you greet the end of Year 1 with a record year, 3 consultants & a brand new office (with ample parking). Fast forward 8 years & you’ve built an empire; 400 staff in 4 international offices & when you take the business to market, there are no hiccups, no issues, no comebacks & you sell it for the nice round figure of £10 million pounds & sail off into the sunset. Oh to run your own business… what a breeze!

HA! What a load of absolute rubbish! Success is not in any way shape or form, based on any ‘ideal blueprint’. Success is a result of who you are & what you decide to become – it’s all about the ‘University of Life’! Starting & running your own recruitment business is tough.

Look, with all the knowledge & all the experience Isotope have, it would be ingenuous & just plain wrong for us to suggest anything different. You know recruitment, we know recruitment; now take all the day-to-day challenges & stresses of being in this wonderful industry & throw in with all of that the day-to-day realities of running a business. Can you now see why there is no such thing as the ‘ideal blueprint’ to success?

Look, our job is not to present the realities of running a recruitment business though rose-tinted glasses, we’re not here to paint this idealistic & romantic picture that you’ll only ever have “highs” when you run this business & we are certainly not going to suggest that you’ll achieve that multi-million pound exit without challenges. But we are confident that you, with awareness of the challenges & the right support from Isotope, will achieve the success you desire from your own business. That it can give you the financial freedom you want, the autonomy you crave, the flexibility you desire & the pride you’ve been searching for. But without getting too over-excited, let’s talk about 3 very real, very genuine & very honest challenges that no matter who you are, you will face when you run your own business. We hope that through understanding these challenges & with the support of Isotope will you feel suitably equipped to overcome them.

We hope that through understanding these challenges & with the support of Isotope will you feel suitably equipped to overcome them.

1. Business is tough.

You’ll have to quit the ‘security’ of employment. Once you’ve convinced yourself that leaving a pretty well paid, consistent & respectable employed role is a good idea, you’ll have to convince those around you too. Having waved goodbye to those employment perks, paid holidays & healthy commission checks, you’ll have to start a business. While starting a business is easy, being successful in business is tough, really tough & it won’t be long into your business career that you’ll experience that reality first-hand.

2. It might not work.

A scary thought for sure, but one of the very honest realities of running a business is that even with all the tools & the unwavering support provided by Isotope there is still a chance this business will not work out. Therefore you have to be resilient & ready to overcome the inevitable challenges that will come your way. Look, you will never experience a business without its challenges; challenges are part of business & therefore you need to ask yourself – are you up for that challenge?

3. You versus who?

Comradery is one the many fantastic traits of many recruitment teams. Unfortunately that is something you have to wave goodbye to when you start your own business – which is a tough thing to do. From now on it’s you versus you &, while that might sound like a corny expression used only by American ‘motivational’ speakers, it’s the reality of working by yourself. While Isotope is certainly there to offer any & all support necessary to help you through this, are you ready? Do you have the discipline that working alone requires? Do you have the discipline to remain accountable to yourself?
