So, you’re thinking about the idea of starting your own recruitment agency?

Perhaps this isn’t the first time you’ve thought about the idea & heck, perhaps this won’t be the last – but this time, things feel a little bit different. You’re on the Isotope website, exploring the offering of Isotope & therefore the very real reality of starting your own recruitment business might feel like it’s sinking in.

With that comes waves of excitement coupled with tsunamis of apprehension & nerves. But that’s normal, is it not? After all, launching your own recruitment business is a serious step; this isn’t just for you, it’s for the ones you love, the ones that have supported you up until now & therefore, with absolute clarity & sincerity, let’s take some time to consider some of the “things” you need to think about before you make the leap, hit the green button & venture into the realms of Recruitment Entrepreneurship.

1) Your market approach

While it’s great to forecast & speculate as to where this new business might be in 3,5,10 years’ time; you & I both know that the most important stage right now, is the first 6-12 months. & part of giving yourself the best foundation to succeed is to have a clear approach to your market.

The majority of clients that Isotope are fortunate enough to support, work & focus in the recruitment sector they have been working for years prior; they view their own businesses market as simply an extension of what they’ve been doing for their employer with (of course) outstanding success!

Historically it’s been more suitable to be niche than broad in terms of your market approach but to also approach each month, each week & each day with the same continual mantra – to make a placement. Approach the first 6-12 months with conviction & a desire to niche early, of course; but remember those three eternal words… Make. A. Placement.

2) Temp’ vs Perm’?

The beauty of the Isotope model means that the Recruitment Ventures that we work with have the capabilities to work in whatever capacity they desire in their own agency. & therefore the question is always – what would you like to do?

What’s your bread & butter? Are you a temp’ recruiter through & through, do you bleed timesheets & ooze margins & charge rates? Or are a perm’ based recruiter, someone who has gained a foothold within their specialism &, yes there’s a temp’ opportunity, but for them it’s just not of interest.

We would always advise the fantastic Recruitment Consultants we work with to focus on personal preference above all else in the first 6-12 months of the business. If, at the end of the first year, it feels right to expand your offering & perhaps venture into new markets then lean on Isotope & do just that. But have confidence that, whatever approach you adopt in those opening months/years, it will work if you have the experience & infrastructure behind you to do so.

3) But why?

Ah… motivation. You can’t go a whole blog about starting your own recruitment business without talking about motivation, can you?

When considering the idea of starting your own recruitment business, understanding why you want what you want is (in our eyes) so important. SO why not review the specific motivations you have around the idea, what is it that you are hoping to achieve, more importantly, why do you want this?

It’s something we talk a lot about throughout our website – like here – & that’s because we know how challenging & tough running your own business can feel at times. Couple that with the widely understood challenges of recruitment & there are going to be times where you question what you are doing. & it’s times like that, that it’s so important you have strong & focused motivations.

So the question is simple – why do you really want this?

4) What support do you need?

What support would you value when starting your own recruitment agency; this is something that is (of course) very important to consider before making the leap into Entrepreneurship.

Wherever you are looking for support, in our eyes, you need to ensure that that support aligns with what you are looking to achieve. Whether you are trying to find the right accounts team to manage the back-office elements of your business or trying to source the right business partner to help you grow & scale your recruitment business – the question you should always consider is, does this particular element of support align with what & how I want my business to look.

At the end of the day, you’re an experienced recruiter, you know your market & you know what type of agency you want to build. What we hope is that you consider the pointers above, you think about your market, your offering & the particular drivers for you to start your own agency & then, having thought about all those aspects, we’d love to encourage you to pick up the phone to one of the team here at Isotope to have a chat. To talk through your ideas & explore the various ways you can build the business you strive for.

So, you’re thinking about the idea of starting your own recruitment agency… is now a good time to chat?
